This classic comfort food is a favorite among both kids and adults alike, making it the perfect choice for a family-friendly meal that is sure to please even the pickiest eaters.

Dating back to the early 1950s, chicken nuggets have become a staple in American cuisine, with variations found all around the world.

The origins of this beloved dish can be traced back to Robert C. Baker, a food science professor at Cornell University, who is credited with developing the first commercially available chicken nugget. Since then, the recipe has evolved, with many home cooks putting their own spin on the classic dish.

While some recipes for chicken nuggets can be complicated and time-consuming, this oven-baked version is simple and straightforward, making it perfect for busy weeknights or lazy weekends.

With just a few basic ingredients and a little bit of prep work, you can have delicious, homemade chicken nuggets on the table in no time. So why settle for the frozen, store-bought version when you can easily make your own healthier, tastier alternative at home?

Ingredients

Chicken Breast Fillets: Chicken breast fillets are boneless, skinless cuts of chicken meat that are lean and tender. They are the main protein in this recipe and provide a healthy source of lean protein.

Plain Flour: Plain flour, also known as all-purpose flour, is used to coat the chicken pieces before dipping them in the egg mixture. It helps the breadcrumbs adhere to the chicken and creates a crispy crust when baked.

Eggs: Eggs are beaten and used to coat the flour-coated chicken pieces. They act as a binder, helping the breadcrumbs stick to the chicken and creating a crispy coating when baked.

Breadcrumbs: Breadcrumbs are used to coat the chicken nuggets, adding a crunchy texture to the dish. They can be seasoned with additional herbs and spices for added flavor.

Paprika: Paprika is a ground spice made from dried red peppers. It adds a subtle smoky flavor and vibrant color to the chicken nuggets.

Garlic Powder: Garlic powder is a versatile seasoning made from dehydrated garlic cloves. It adds a savory, umami flavor to the chicken nuggets.

Onion Powder: Onion powder is a pantry staple made from dehydrated onions. It adds a sweet and savory flavor to the chicken nuggets.

Salt: Salt is a crucial seasoning that enhances the flavors of the other ingredients in the recipe. It helps to bring out the natural flavors of the chicken and seasonings.

Black Pepper: Black pepper is a versatile spice that adds a mild heat and earthy flavor to the chicken nuggets. It complements the other seasonings and adds depth to the dish.

Cooking Spray or Olive Oil: Cooking spray or olive oil is used to grease the baking sheet and coat the chicken nuggets before baking. This helps to achieve a crispy texture and prevent the nuggets from sticking to the pan.

Serving Suggestions and Variations

When serving Oven Baked Chicken Nuggets, consider adding dipping sauces such as barbecue sauce, honey mustard, ranch dressing, or buffalo sauce. These sauces add an extra layer of flavor to the crispy nuggets.

  • For a healthier alternative, try using whole wheat breadcrumbs instead of regular breadcrumbs in the recipe. This will increase the fiber content of the nuggets.
  • Instead of plain flour, try using almond flour or coconut flour for a gluten-free option.
  • To add a kick of spice to the nuggets, mix in some cayenne pepper or chili powder to the breadcrumb mixture.
  • For a cheesy twist, add some grated Parmesan or cheddar cheese to the breadcrumb mixture before coating the chicken nuggets.
  • Try cutting the chicken breast fillets into smaller pieces to create bite-sized nuggets that are perfect for appetizers or snacks.
