Pizza Sauce

Creating your own pizza sauce from scratch can elevate your homemade pizzas to a whole new level of deliciousness. With a few simple ingredients and a little bit of time, you can whip up a batch of flavorful pizza sauce that will rival any store-bought version.

Originating from Italy, where pizza is practically a religion, this sauce is a key component of the beloved dish. Don’t let the idea of making your own sauce intimidate you – it’s actually quite simple and incredibly rewarding.

Plus, you can customize it to your own taste preferences, adjusting the seasonings to create the perfect balance of flavors. So, roll up your sleeves and get ready to take your homemade pizza game to the next level with this easy-to-follow pizza sauce recipe.

Expert Tip: If you like a chunkier sauce, you can leave the tomatoes slightly less blended for some texture in your pizza sauce.

Ingredients

Tomatoes: Fresh tomatoes are the star ingredient of this pizza sauce. They provide a rich, tangy flavor and a vibrant red color that is characteristic of traditional pizza sauce. Tomatoes are packed with vitamins and minerals, making them a healthy addition to your pizza.

Oregano and Basil: These aromatic herbs add depth and complexity to the sauce, infusing it with a burst of fresh, herbal flavor. Oregano brings a slightly earthy, peppery note, while basil contributes a sweet, slightly minty flavor. Together, they create a harmonious blend of Italian-inspired taste.

Olive Oil: Olive oil not only adds richness and depth to the sauce but also helps to bind the flavors together. It provides a luscious mouthfeel and adds a hint of fruity, peppery flavor that complements the tomatoes beautifully.

Crushed Chillies: For those who enjoy a bit of heat, crushed chillies add a spicy kick to the sauce. They bring warmth and depth of flavor without overwhelming the other ingredients, allowing you to customize the level of heat to your liking.

Salt, Black Pepper, and Sugar: These simple seasonings help to balance and enhance the flavors of the sauce. Salt brings out the natural sweetness of the tomatoes and herbs, while black pepper adds a subtle warmth and complexity. A touch of sugar helps to round out the acidity of the tomatoes, creating a well-rounded and flavorful sauce.

Italian Herb Seasoning: This blend of dried herbs, such as thyme, rosemary, and marjoram, adds an extra layer of flavor and complexity to the sauce. It imparts a savory, herbaceous taste that is reminiscent of classic Italian cuisine.

Garlic Paste: Garlic is a staple ingredient in many Italian dishes, and for good reason. It adds a pungent, savory flavor that complements the sweetness of the tomatoes and herbs. Garlic paste is used here for convenience, but you can also use fresh garlic if preferred.

Expert Tip: Feel free to customize the herbs and spices to suit your taste preferences. You can add other herbs like thyme or rosemary for extra flavor.

Serving Suggestions

  • Spread it on pizza dough: Of course, the most obvious way to enjoy this pizza sauce is by spreading it over your pizza dough. Whether you’re making a classic Margherita pizza or getting creative with your toppings, this sauce will provide a flavorful base for your pizza creations.
  • Use as a dipping sauce: This versatile sauce isn’t just limited to pizza. It also makes a delicious dipping sauce for breadsticks, garlic knots, or even mozzarella sticks. Simply heat it up and serve on the side for dipping.
  • Drizzle over other dishes: Get creative and use this pizza sauce to add a burst of flavor to other dishes. Try drizzling it over grilled chicken or fish, tossing it with pasta, or using it as a sauce for homemade meatball subs.
  • Customize your sandwiches: Take your sandwiches to the next level by slathering this sauce onto your favorite bread before adding your fillings. It adds a deliciously tangy and savory flavor that pairs perfectly with deli meats, cheeses, and veggies.
  • Use as a base for other sauces: This pizza sauce can also serve as a base for other sauces. Add a splash of cream to create a creamy tomato sauce for pasta, or stir in some extra herbs and spices to make a spicy marinara sauce for chicken or seafood.

Expert Tip: For a smoother sauce, you can strain the blended tomatoes before cooking to remove any seeds or skin.
